Mother charged with first-degree murder in death of child on New Year’s Eve

A Barrie woman, 47, has been charged with murder in the death of a boy, 10, on New Year’s Eve.

A 47-year-old Barrie, Ont., woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 10-year-old child on New Year’s Eve.

Police say they were called to a home located on Bayview Drive near Little Avenue around 3 p.m. on Dec. 31.

When officers entered the home, they found the boy deceased. A 47-year-old woman, identified by officials as the child’s mother, was also present in the home and was taken to a local hospital.

Once she was cleared medically, investigators say they laid charges on Tuesday, and she was remanded into custody.

Barrie Police maintained a presence in the area for several days as they conducted their investigation.

Officers from the Major Crime Unit and the Forensic Identification Unit are continuing their investigation; however, due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits.
