Calgary is breaking January temperature records as unusually warm weather moves into the city, leading to packed patios but also raising safety concerns.
It was warm in Calgary on Wednesday — really warm.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the daily temperature on Jan. 14 was 16.9 C, shattering the old record of 11.2 C, which was set in 2004.
The city was one of 15 weather stations in southern Alberta that set new daily high temperature records on Wednesday, ECCC said.
The other records included:
Bow Island area (new record 16.7 C, old record 10.6 C [set in 2006]);
Bow Valley Provincial Park area (new record 15.1 C, old record 12.2 C [set in 1965]);
Brooks area (new record 15.8 C, old record 13.3 C [set in 1942]);
Cardston area (new record 17.3 C, old record 14.9 C [set in 2019]);
Claresholm area (new record 19.5 C, old record 13.8 C [set in 2008]);
Crowsnest area (new record 10.9 C, old record 8.5 C [set in 1994]);
Drumheller area (new record 11.4 C, old record 9.1 C [set in 2008]);
Lethbridge area (new record 17.5 C, old record 13.3 C [set in 1942]);
Medicine Hat area (new record 14.4 C, old record 9.4 C [set in 1931]);
Milk River area (new record 17.8 C, old record 11 C [set in 2006]);
Nordegg area (new record 16.3 C, old record 11.7 C [set in 1968]);
Pincher Creek area (new record 13.2 C, old record 11.7 C [set in 1973]);
Sundre area (new record 16.8 C, old record 12.5 C [set in 2008]); and
Waterton Park area (new record 14.4 C, old record 11.1 C [set in 2019]).
The provincial capital broke its own heat record on Wednesday. Edmonton recorded a high of 11.6 C, surpassing the old record of 9.1 C, set in 1942.
