‘She inspires me to be the best version of myself’: B.C. singer encouraged by dog to do vocal exercises on walks

Adam meets a pair of Vancouver best friends who go on walks together every day while searching for inspiration to be the best versions of themselves.

VANCOUVER — Ruth the pup and her owner Dalilah Fabiola are exchanging treats for shaking both paws, before going for an unconventional dog walk.

“I love her,” Dalilah pats the top of Ruth’s curly head. “She’s my best friend.”

Ruth is also the sort of friend who—no matter the weather, no matter their mood—encourages Dalilah to get out and purse her passion.

“Sometimes I’m tired and I just don’t feel like doing it,” Dalilah says. “But I feel like in the first five minutes I’m like, ‘This is my favourite thing! I like doing it!’”

It begins with Dalilah playing with Ruth and throwing her a ball.

“I need to give her a little attention before I can lock in with the singing,” Dalilah laughs.

That’s when the ordinary dog walk evolves into an extraordinary vocal workout.

Dalilah sings all sorts of combinations of notes out loud, while Ruth leads the way on her leash.

Dalilah is a singer who’s working on her own album after recording vocals for a friend’s.

Ruth plays multiple roles.

“She just inspires me to be the best version of myself,” Dalilah smiles.

During these dog walks, Ruth is a canine coach, leading Dalilah on three-hour walks to push her person to keep doing her vocal workouts to improve her performance.

Ruth can also be a cheerleader, wagging her tail when Dalilah hits all the right notes.

“I’ve played songs that I’ve made, and I’ve seen her look at the speaker and then look at me,” Dalilah smiles. “It’s really cute.”

On the other hand, whenever life feels out of tune, Ruth is consistent and cuddly confidant.

“I love her,” Dalilah smiles down at her dog. “She’s my baby.”

While other creative collaborators—from Lennon and McCartney to Sonny and Cher—may be better known, you can bet that Dalilah Fabiola and Ruth will never stop making music together.

“She’s the greatest love of my life,” Dalilah smiles.
