Frigid temperatures and heavy snow are expected to continue throughout the day on Thursday into Friday night across central Ontario as Environment Canada has put a yellow snow squall warning in effect for the majority of communities across the region.
Barrie, Collingwood and Orillia are under a yellow snow squall warning. The national weather agency says those regions can expect between 15 and 30 centimetres of snow squalls Thursday night through Friday evening. Strong winds gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour will also blow snow around creating reduced visibility, according to Environment Canada.
25 to 40 centimetres could blanket areas in the north of the region including Bracebridge, Huntsville, Owen Sound, Blue Mountains, Port Carling and Parry Sound, Environment Canada said.
Southern Grey County can also expect snowfall amounts of around 10 to 20 centimetres with blowing snow causing reduced visibility.
20 to 40 centimetres of snow could be dumped on Midland and Coldwater.
Orangeville and Shelburne are under a yellow blowing snow advisory and those communities could also see heavy amounts of snow with 5 to 10 centimetres possible throughout Thursday into Thursday night.
The weather centre says the snow squalls and local blowing snow can make it difficult to see creating hazardous travel conditions.
Roads and walkways could become slippery at times making it tricky to navigate as snow continues to fall.
