A Lamborghini was impounded this week after it was clocked travelling nearly three times the posted speed limit in Metro Vancouver.

The B.C. Highway Patrol says the Lamborghini SUV reached a speed of 197 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on the Alex Fraser Bridge connecting the communities of Delta and Richmond.

Police stopped the luxury vehicle just after 8 p.m. on Feb. 4 and issued the driver, a 51-year-old man from Surrey, a “pocketful of traffic tickets,” according to a news release Friday.

“Some drivers seem to think that bridges are free from speed enforcement,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of the B.C. Highway Patrol said in a statement.

“That is a foolish and dangerous assumption. Bridges are no strangers to deadly collisions.”

The driver and his two passengers were picked up from the scene by family, while the SUV was ordered impounded for seven days, police said.

In addition to the impoundment and towing fees, the driver was fined $483 for excessive speeding and $109 for an illegal window tint, according to the release.

Traffic police say the driver is also facing at least three years of high-risk premiums on his insurance, bringing the total estimated cost of the interaction to about $2,500.

“The driver claimed he was showing his out-of-country cousins the sights of Metro Vancouver,” McLaughlin added.

“Instead, they saw the consequences of dangerous driving. We’re grateful it didn’t end much worse.”
