Snowmobile accidents were particularly deadly this weekend with Quebec provincial police (SQ) opening investigations into four separate fatal accidents on Saturday alone.
The most recent incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Gage Road in Stanbridge East, in the Eastern Townships.
“For unknown reasons, the driver of the snowmobile veered off the road into a ditch. The victim was a 47-year-old man who was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead a short time later,” said SQ spokesperson Sgt. Valérie Beauchamp in an interview Sunday morning.
“An SQ patrol officer specializing in collision investigations was dispatched to the scene to analyze the scene and try to understand what happened,” she added.
Emergency responders were also called to the scene of a fatal snowmobile crash that occurred on Saturday around 5 p.m. in Hemmingford, in the Montérégie region.
“The victim, a 47-year-old woman, was riding alone on her snowmobile on trail number 5 when she lost control. She collided with a tree. Resuscitation attempts were made on the victim. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the hospital,” Beauchamp reported.
The victim was a resident of Saint-Patrice-de-Sherrington, a small municipality located nearby.
This deadly series of snowmobile accidents began on Saturday at around 12:40 p.m. in Mont-Carmel, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region.
Emergency services were called to the scene of a collision between a pickup truck and a snowmobile on Route 287, near kilometer 15.
“The snowmobiler was traveling on a trail and, when he reached the intersection with Route 287, he failed to make the mandatory stop. He was struck by the pickup truck traveling south on Route 287,” said Beauchamp.
The 57-year-old snowmobiler was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Body found
At around 6:30 p.m., SQ officers were called to Saint-David-de-Falardeau, in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, where three snowmobilers had fallen into Lake La Mothe during a ride.
The three men were traveling on the ice on two snowmobiles when they ended up in the water. Two of them managed to get out, but the third did not.
His body was found late Sunday morning by SQ divers. He was a 49-year-old man from the city of Saguenay.
The lives of the two surviving snowmobilers are not in danger.
“The two men, both in their twenties, were taken care of by paramedics and, fortunately, their lives are not in danger,” said the SQ spokesperson.
