Calgary police say a toddler was killed in a crash that happened in a southwest intersection.
It happened around 4:30 p.m., in the intersection of Hull Avenue S.W. and Horton Road S.W.
Police say a toddler was in a stroller being pushed in a marked crosswalk by two adults when a westbound Jeep Cherokee turned south into the intersection, striking the stroller.
The child was rushed to the hospital and later died. Neither of the adults sustained any injuries.
“The toddler in this case was two years old,” said CPS Acting Insp. Mike Anderson.
“The driver remained on scene and was cooperative with police.”

Police say neither impairment nor speed are considered factors in this collision.
“Yeah, I think it’s extremely concerning. If you look at today, it’s not only concerning - it’s an absolute tragedy. There’s two parents who lost their two-year-old child today and I think, as a city, that’s shocking and disappointing.”

Anderson said it’s too early to tell if any charges will be laid against the driver in the crash.
“It’s going to take time,” he said. “Our investigators are going to be looking at environmental concerns, state of the crosswalk, talking to witnesses. When the parents are ready to talk to us, we’ll be talking to them.
“We’ll be talking to the driver as well to try and determine if they were distracted or if there were any environmental things that played into this.”
Anderson said crashes such as these are very difficult for all first responders, not just CPS.
“They did everything they could but, ultimately, they were not successful. These collisions have a massive impact on our members, on first responders and the greater community as well.”
Police are asking anyone with any information about this collision to call the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or they can contact Crime Stoppers.
