Eight people suffered serious injuries when a coach bus crashed and rolled over on Highway 401 in eastern Ontario Sunday evening, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the single-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 east of Napanee, between County Road 4 and County Road 6, just after 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

Ontario Provincial Police said the bus, with 47 passengers and a driver onboard, entered the ditch and rolled over onto its side in the eastbound lanes. Slippery road conditions were reported at the time of the crash, police said.

Eight people were transported to two hospitals with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

“Eight individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including lacerations, broken bones and dislocations,” police said Monday morning.

The eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 were closed for approximately four hours while emergency crews responded to the crash before reopening around 11 p.m.

Police say the investigation into the cause of the rollover continues.
