A two-year-old child is dead following a motor vehicle incident Sunday evening in the northern Ontario community of Robillard Township.

Ontario Provincial Police said the tragedy took place in a driveway in the community, located near Englehart, just south of Kirkland Lake.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the incident occurred on a rural property while a passenger vehicle was being moved a short distance in a driveway area,” police said in a news release March 9.

“A two-year-old child sustained fatal injuries during the incident.”

Didn’t know the child wasn’t in the vehicle

Police said the preliminary investigation showed that the driver didn’t know the child was no longer in the vehicle when the incident occurred.

The young victim was immediately taken to hospital with serious injuries and was “later pronounced deceased,” police said.

The incident is being investigated by traffic and forensic investigators with the OPP, under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario.
