B.C. RCMP highlight ‘unbelievably’ high number of violations by single commercial driver

A commercial truck driver has been fined for what police are calling an “unbelievably” high number of violations during a recent enforcement blitz in Burnaby.

Police are shining a spotlight on one commercial truck driver who was recently fined for an “unbelievably” high number of violations during an enforcement blitz in Metro Vancouver.

The Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement group carried out the one-day operation last month in Burnaby, inspecting 67 vehicles and pulling more than half of them off the road, the RCMP said in a news release Thursday.

The driver of a dump truck towing a trailer carrying a bobcat was cited for six violations and fined $1,215, according to authorities, who provided examples and photos of the infractions.

“A fuel cap was missing and covered with a sandwich bag, which was secured with a charging cable,” police said.

“A fuel tank was secured to the vehicle by two non-rated straps; one was damaged and the other was pressing against a broken piece of the fuel tank housing that was cutting into the strap,” the statement continued.

The truck’s emergency brake was “inoperative,” and its steering mechanism was “defective,” police said, adding that the axles were bent from “repeated overloading.”

The truck and its licence plates were seized on site.

“There are many professional drivers and companies that follow road safety laws. This is clearly not one of them,” said Burnaby RCMP Const. Kevin Connolly.

“This is not an accurate representation of every commercial vehicle on our roadways, it is, however, a good example of why we do these inspections.”
