Two men have been arrested in the Dominican Republic in connection with the death of a Quebec teen who was on vacation with his brother.

Tristan Primeau Poitras, 19, was shot and killed on Monday, March 23, while riding a motorcycle on the Puerto Plata-Maimon Highway in Puerto Plata, according to a news release from the national police force.

“According to the preliminary report, the young man, who was temporarily staying at the Riu Bachata hotel, died from a gunshot wound, according to the corresponding report,” the release reads.

According to the release, local residents Jordi Yúnior Severiano, 23, and Rangel Merete Rodríguez, 30, were identified in a lineup by Poitras’s brother, who police say was with him when he was shot.

Police say that the two men allegedly intercepted Poitras and his brother and tried to rob them.

“Under those circumstances, one of the detainees allegedly fired the shot that caused the fatal wound, while both were travelling on a motorcycle,” the police say.

The suspects are in custody and will appear in court in the near future while the investigation continues.

Global Affairs Canada said officials are providing consular assistance to the family and are in contact with local authorities.
