A former Manitoba MLA and Winnipeg city councillor has been charged with sexual assault following an investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service.

Police announced Friday that Scott Fielding, 53, was arrested Thursday and charged with sexual assault. He was released on an undertaking and will appear in court at a future date.

None of the charges have been proven in court.

According to a news release sent Friday, police allege the incident took place at a hotel for a work conference in the 300 block of St. Mary Avenue in March 2024.

Police allege Fielding and a 34-year-old woman were employed at the same firm at the time of the incident and were attending the conference.

It is alleged the pair attended different establishments with other co-workers, and the woman was escorted back to her hotel room, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted.

Police said the incident was reported to a law enforcement agency in another jurisdiction in January 2025, where an investigation started.

Fielding was elected as MLA for the Kirkfield Park constituency in 2016 for the Progressive Conservatives, and was re-elected in 2019. During his time as MLA, he served as finance minister and families minister. He stepped down from provincial politics in 2022.

Fielding also served as city councillor for the St. James-Brooklands ward from 2006 to 2014.

CTV News has reached out to Fielding for comment.
