For Italy’s large diaspora, a new law is limiting citizenship by descent to those with a parent or grandparent who is an Italian citizen.

This month, Italy’s constitutional court signalled that it would reject the first legal challenge to the law, which was introduced in March 2025. Previously, anyone with an Italian ancestor, including a great-grandparent, could seek citizenship and apply for an Italian passport under what was known as a “right of blood” rule.

The new citizenship restrictions are now dashing the dreams of those who wished to live in the land of their ancestors.

Are you a Canadian with Italian roots affected by Italy’s new citizenship law? Has your Italian citizenship application been put on hold because of the legal change? Are you currently trying to build a new life in Italy? Have your dreams of living in Italy been dashed by new citizenship restrictions?
