Quebec’s chief coroner has ordered a public inquiry into the deaths of several homeless people in Montreal over the past few months.
The announcement comes days after Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada was visibly moved while addressing the deaths of two homeless men found dead in the city last week.
The inquiry, announced Wednesday by Chief Coroner Reno Bernier, will be presided over by Coroner Stéphanie Gamache and will examine five recent deaths:
- Jennifer De Nobile, 30, who died Sept. 23, 2025
- Marie Soleil Nantais, 46, who died Oct. 24, 2025
- Valmont Brousseau, 71, who died March 24, 2026
- Alain Paris, 55, who died March 24, 2026
- Serge Martin, 57, who died March 25, 2026
A news release issued by the coroner’s office Wednesday said the inquiry may also consider additional deaths that occurred under similar circumstances if the coroner deems it necessary.
The goal is to examine the causes and circumstances surrounding the deaths, identify contributing factors, and issue concrete recommendations to better protect people experiencing homelessness and prevent future deaths.
“In a context where deaths among people experiencing homelessness are on the rise, a thorough reflection is needed to address the human and social issues at play,” Bernier said in a statement.
“Because every life counts, it is essential to shed full light on the causes and circumstances of these deaths in order to prevent others, support coordination among the various stakeholders involved, and better protect the most vulnerable.”
Gamache will be assisted by prosecutor Émilie Fay-Carlos. Hearing dates and other details will be announced later and posted on the coroner’s website.
