A sports store in Quebec’s Laurentians region was targeted in an unusual robbery on Saturday, when a man allegedly stole several expensive hockey sticks during business hours.
Pierre Gendron, owner of Sports Rousseau in Boisbriand, says he still can’t believe it.
“This is unheard of,” he said, telling Noovo Info that the man entered the store normally, started looking at the hockey sticks, took several expensive sticks, and walked past the register without paying.
In a video of the theft, the suspect can be seen tossing several sticks into his car before quickly fleeing, without even closing the trunk.
A woman can be heard asking someone to call the police.
Gendron estimates that the high-end carbon-fibre sticks are worth between $4,000 and $5,000.
“This is where we’ve ended up. We can’t believe it,” said Gendron.
Jean-Sébastien Dorval, director of product development at Warrior Sports, said the prices for top-brand hockey sticks have risen, and it’s not uncommon to see sticks priced at $400 before taxes.
Carbon-fibre is made from petroleum, added Dorval, who speculates that with oil prices skyrocketing in recent weeks, stick prices will likely rise too.
Therese-de-Blainville police are investigating. They are asking anyone with any information to come forward anonymously at (450) 435-2421 ext 0.
No arrests have been made.
