One dead after shooting at Lambton College campus bar

Police are investigating Sarnia, Ont.’s first homicide of the year after a shooting at a Lambton College bar. CTV London’s Bryan Bicknell reports.

One man is dead after a shooting at Lambton College’s campus bar during a student-run event.

Just before 1 a.m. on Friday, police in Sarnia, Ont., were called to the bar with a report of a shooting.

When police arrived on scene, three people were found hurt, one with life-threatening injuries. The other two people sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A 20-year-old Sarnia man was taken to a local hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead. He was identified as Dane Nisbet, known in the local hockey community.

Sarnia police could not confirm if the victims were students at the school and are treating the investigation as a homicide. Officers will be on scene for an ‘extended period of time.’

“We are not ready to say what the relationship between the potential suspects and the victims are … multiple victims are known to each other. But we will not be commenting at this point what the relationships of the suspects are,” said Sarnia Police Service Deputy Chief Mike Van Sickle.

In response to the events, Lambton College posted a statement on social media:

“Lambton College is deeply saddened to share that an individual has died following a shooting early this morning during a Student Administrative Council event on the Sarnia Main Campus. Two other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“This loss is a profound tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences to the individual’s family, loved ones, and friends and to everyone affected by this staggering loss. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.

“The Sarnia campus remains closed for Friday, April 10. This closure is inclusive of all classes and services at the Main Campus, Fire School, Skilled Trades Training Centre, EarlyON Child and Family Centre, and Community Employment Services. The Ottawa campus is not impacted. We ask our community to please avoid campus.

“Support is being provided to members of the Lambton College community through Counselling and Wellness and the Employee and Family Assistance Plan.

“We continue to work closely with Sarnia Police Service as they investigate. We thank Sarnia Police Service and emergency services for their response. We also thank our Sarnia-Lambton community for their support at this difficult time. We ask that the privacy of our community members and their loved ones be respected.”

Nobody has been arrested as of Friday afternoon. The college itself is not believed to be targeted, the Sarnia Police Service said.

Ontario’s minister of colleges and universities offered his condolences.

“My thoughts are with the loved ones, the victims, the injured individuals, the entire campus community during this tragic time. Mental health supports are available for anyone who may need them,” said Nolan Quinn.
