A mother and her child were taken to hospital after they jumped from their apartment window to escape a fire in Thompson, Man.
The Thompson Professional Firefighters Association (TPFA) wrote on social media that its members were dispatched Monday to a fire on the third floor of a mid-rise apartment building on Nickel Road.
While en route, they were told a mother and her young child were in need of medical attention after jumping from a third-storey window to escape the flames.
Crews arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the building, TPFA said.
Firefighters found the mother and child and began treating their injuries while others started battling the flames from inside the apartment complex.
“Upon entering the suite of origin, it was identified that the fire had originated in the kitchen,” the association wrote.
“Interior crews performed a quick knockdown of the fire and performed a primary search for any additional victims.”

They didn’t find anyone else inside, but the family’s cat was in one of the bedrooms, which they brought to safety and eventually reunited with the family.
The association said the damage was contained to the kitchen, but the rest of the suite also sustained smoke damage.
According to the TPFA, the mother and child were taken to hospital in stable condition.
The cause of the fire appears to have been cooking-related, the association said.
