An employee died on the job May 1 at Agnico Eagle’s Upper Beaver Project in northern Ontario, the company has announced.
“It is with immense sadness that Agnico Eagle announces that a fatal incident involving an employee occurred at the Upper Beaver Project,” the company said in a social media post.
“The team at Upper Beaver is currently cooperating with local authorities to determine the cause of the incident.”
In an email to CTV News, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development confirmed an investigation is underway.
Ministry is investigating
The ministry “was notified of a fatality underground at the Upper Beaver Mine at the Township of Gauthier,” the email said.
“Two ministry inspectors attended the scene to begin an investigation. As the investigation is ongoing, no further details are available at this time.”
A spokesperson for the Ontario Provincial Police said Tuesday morning that officers are helping the ministry with the investigation.
Agnico is working to develop the Upper Beaver deposit, located in the Township of Gauthier in northeastern Ontario, into a gold and copper mine.
“On behalf of the entire Agnico Eagle team, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of our colleague,” the company said.
