Health Canada is warning consumers to “immediately stop using” infant self-feeding devices that were sold on Amazon.ca due to the risk of illness or death.
It has advised consumers to toss the made-in-China infant self-feeding devices, according to its advisory posted Monday. It said the products could cause choking or breathing issues from food entering the lungs.
Amazon.ca reported that it sold 545 units in Canada, the federal health department said.
“Unattended infant feeding practices are discouraged by Health Canada and Canadian professional medical associations as independent feeding should not be done until the child is ready,” it wrote.
Caregivers should monitor infants at all times for potential problems, Health Canada added. Caregivers typically burp the infant periodically, as babies regurgitate small amounts of liquid food when feeding, it added.
No injuries or incidents were reported to Health Canada as of Monday, the federal department said.
Which products are affected?
The following products, with their Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN), are affected:
- Bottle Holder for Self Feeding, 2025 New Adjustable Feeding Pillow (ASIN B0FTG6PND1)
- Adjustable Feeding Pillow and Plush Bottle Support (ASIN B0G6X7N21T, ASIN B0G66HM4P2)
- Feeding Pillow for Newborns (ASIN B0FP4MTKW1)
- Bottle Holder Pillow: (ASIN B0FXGPT354)
Are baby self-feeders safe?
An infant self-feeding device allows babies to feed themselves on their own when the bottle is positioned in a certain way. However, the devices could make it difficult for the infant to stop feeding, according to Health Canada’s advisory.
Infant self-feeding devices are already banned in Canada under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. They are “prohibited products” that can’t be sold, imported or advertised in the country, and could be detained at the border, according to the government.
