Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a tractor-trailer driver with impaired driving after a traffic stop on Dawson Road — the second alcohol-related incident involving a commercial vehicle on the same road in two days.

The latest stop occurred on May 7 at 2:45 p.m., when a member of the Thunder Bay OPP detachment pulled over a tractor-trailer unit for a designated truck route offence.

“The officer was conducting mandatory alcohol screening, and as a result of this the driver of the tractor-trailer was arrested for impaired and over 80 operation,” police said in a social media post.

Open alcohol found in cab

During the stop, the officer located numerous open vodka bottles in the cab, readily available to the driver, according to police.

The driver was charged with impaired operation, dangerous operation and failing to provide a breath sample, as well as driving while having alcohol readily available and disobeying the designated truck route signs.

Additionally, the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the tractor was impounded for seven days.

Previous incident

OPP said this is the second alcohol-related offence in two days involving the same officer on the same road.

On May 6, the officer stopped another tractor-trailer unit on Dawson Road, conducted mandatory alcohol screening and the driver registered in the ‘warn range’ suspension.

As a result, that driver’s licence was suspended for seven days.

CTV News has reached out to OPP for more information on the incidents, but has not yet received a response.

“OPP and our enforcement partners will continue to enforce the DTR, along with other commercial motor vehicle enforcement,” police said, concluding the post.
