One step closer to opening day? Traffic barriers removed approaching Gordie Howe International Bridge

There has been a sign that Windsor could be one step closer to the Gordie Howe International Bridge opening.

The Ministry of Transportation has opened a section of the Herb Gray Parkway to traffic, which leads towards the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

It is the highway built to connect Highway 401 to the second bridge crossing on Windsor’s west end.

Ever since it opened in November 2015, the far outside fast lane was closed to traffic near where the highway passes St. Clair College.

Over the weekend, the traffic barriers were removed, and the fast lane is now open until the highway runs alongside E.C. Row Expressway.

“MTO removed barrels along the Highway 401 corridor this past weekend to allow crews to refresh pavement markings,” a spokesperson told CTV News in an email statement.

“All new sign installations are complete.”

Traffic is reduced from three lanes down to one in time to exit at Ojibway Parkway, pending the opening of the bridge.

MTO officials declined to comment on when that would be, and officials with the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority did not respond to two emails requesting an update on the project.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a $6.7 billion project which officials have said will open “spring 2026.”
