The Victoria Day long weekend brought a record-breaking number of excessive speeders to a mountain highway, according to the B.C. Highway Patrol.
Officers conducted an enforcement blitz along the Sea to Sky Highway, resulting 66 drivers being pulled over for going more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit, Mounties said in a statement. On Sunday alone, 33 vehicles were impounded for excessive speeding.
“At one moment in time, we had four high-end Porsches and two motorcycles lined up waiting to be towed to the impound lot,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said, in the news release.
“We want our highways to be a beautiful and safe drive for everyone, and we’re going to keep removing excessive speeders until people get the message.”
McLaughlin also noted the rates of speed clocked on the highway over the holiday weekend too often have fatal consequences and that the drivers caught speeding were doing so in an area where signs alerted motorists to expect a police presence.
“It’s not acceptable,” he said, in the statement.
The long weekend that previously had the dubious distinction of holding the record for impounds due to excessive speeding was Labour Day in 2025, when 60 vehicles were taken off the road.
