Kirkland Lake death leads to murder charge

Ontario Provincial Police say one person has been charged in connection with a death investigation in Kirkland Lake, Ont.

At about 5:45 p.m. on May 22, OPP officers responded to a local hospital to assist paramedics from the District of Timiskaming Social Services Administration Board with an individual who had sustained serious injuries.

“Despite life-saving efforts, the individual succumbed to their injuries,” OPP said in a news release.

“At this time, the identity of the victim will not be released.”

Accused in custody

As a result of the investigation, a 44-year-old local man was charged with second-degree murder.

The accused appeared in court and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 29.

Investigation ongoing

Provincial police said the investigation remains ongoing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
