Published:

A landspout tornado near Bethune/Disley Friday has been confirmed as Saskatchewan’s first of the year and rated EF0 with no damage.

Researchers at the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) have confirmed Saskatchewan’s first recorded tornado of 2026 developed on Friday afternoon near Disley.

According to the research team out of Ontario’s Western University, the landspout tornado began at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday in the area surrounding Disley and Bethune.

Witnesses captured video and pictures of the landspout south of Disley.

No damage was reported, giving the tornado a default rating of EF-0. The NTP team will further verify the rating with satellite imagery.

The estimated site of the tornado is approximately 45 kilometres northwest of Regina.

While typically weaker than their supercell-generated counterparts, landspout tornadoes can still pose a threat to people and property according to Environment Canada.

Observers are asked to keep a safe distance, or take cover if needed.
