Friday was the third anniversary of the death of Levon Fox, who was shot and killed by Calgary police in 2023.

Friends and family walked along Memorial Drive to the Fourth Avenue flyover, the spot where Fox was killed.

He was the passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a slow-speed pursuit.

His family says the aim of the walk was to bring awareness to what happened, saying Fox was not armed and didn’t need to die.

Lena Wildman Lena Wildman, the mother of Levon Fox, spoke to CTV News on the third anniversary of his death. He was shot and killed by a Calgary police officer.

“Our city police need to revisit their threat assessment (policies),” said Lena Wildman, Levon’s mom, “and have better cultural awareness.

“It has to be ongoing cultural awareness,” she added. “It can’t just be a one-off and we talk (about) reconciliation -- and you know, reconciliation the word is overused until we put action into making change happen.”

Levon Fox Levon Fox was a passenger in a vehicle who was shot and killed by a Calgary police officer in 2023.

The driver of the vehicle, Wesley Davidson, was also killed.

“Not only was that officer shooting at the driver, he was shooting at the passengers, too, which is even more egregious,” said Tom Engel, criminal defence lawyer representing Fox’s family, in a 2025 interview with CTV News.

Engel is representing Fox’s family.

“Nobody can remember an on-duty officer in Alberta ever being charged with a criminal offence of murder,” said Engel.

An investigation into the incident by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) recommended charges be laid.

Const. Craig Stothard faces two counts of second-degree murder and his preliminary hearing begins on Aug. 10.

Despite the charges, Fox’s family is remaining cautious about the legal proceedings.

“My fear is that he will be given special treatment simply because he’s a police officer,” Wildman said.
