One dead, one injured after shooting in Pelican Narrows, suspect arrested

Saskatchewan RCMP issued an alert on Monday instructing residents in the area to stay inside, lock their doors and call 911 in case of emergencies.

Saskatchewan RCMP have arrested a suspect after a shooting in the northern community of Pelican Narrows left one person dead and another seriously injured.

5:14 a.m.

Officials with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation say that for safety reasons, schools and the local band office will be closed the rest of the week.

8:09 p.m.

RCMP say a suspect has been arrested in connection to the fatal shooting in Pelican Narrows earlier today.

As a result, the civil emergency alert issued for the threat of an active shooter has ended. The alert was issued for a total of 22 communities as RCMP searched for the suspect.

Officers are reportedly remaining at the scene of the arrest as the investigation continues.

In the update, residents were encouraged to return to normal activities.

6:44 p.m.

RCMP have confirmed one person is dead while another is seriously injured following a shooting in Pelican Narrows.

Officers responded shortly before 2 p.m. Monday to a reported shooting near the local health clinic in Pelican Narrows. The service noted that previous updates, reporting the shooting took place at the clinic, were inaccurate.

RCMP discovered two injured individuals at the scene. One was confirmed to be dead while the other was seriously injured. No other details regarding the victims were provided. RCMP added that it would not provide identifying details about the victims at this time.

As of 6:44 p.m. the search for the suspect, who is described as a man wearing all black clothing and a face covering, is ongoing.

RCMP again warned local residents to not approach anyone matching the suspect’s description and to report any information regarding the suspect or suspicious individuals to police immediately.

The service ended off by saying its next update is scheduled for Tuesday morning, unless an increased risk to public safety is identified before then.

4:31 p.m.

In a brief update, RCMP said its investigation remains ongoing and the emergency alert remains active.

The service also noted it will not be holding a media availability Monday evening, given the ongoing investigation.

“We do not have further information to provide at this time,” the update read.

3:18 p.m.

In an update issued at 3:18 p.m., RCMP reported the suspect is a man, wearing all black clothing with a face covering.

According to police, he is travelling on foot in an unknown direction.

The update also expanded the number of affected communities from four to more than 20.

The communities named in the alert include Air Ronge, Brabant Lake, Creighton, Cumberland House, Cumberland Cree House 20, Denare Beach, Division No. 18, unorganized, Flin Flon, Four Portages 157C, Grandmother’s Bay 219, Kimosom Pwatinahk 203 (Deschambault Lake), La Ronge, Lac La Ronge 156, Missinipe, Pelican Narrows, Pelican Narrows 184B, Potato River 156A, Sandy Bay, Southend 200, Stanley 157, Sturgeon Weir 184F, Sucker River 156C (Nemebien River 156C).

2:29 p.m.

The original civil emergency alert was issued at 2:29 p.m. Monday. The brief message outlined the alert was in effect for Pelican Narrows, Pelican Narrows 184B, Division No. 18 Unorganized and Kimosom Pwatinahk 203 (Deschambault Lake).

The alert instructed residents in the area to find a safe location immediately, lock their doors and stay away from the Pelican Narrows area if possible.

Residents were also ordered not to approach the shooter, to call 911 in case of emergencies and not to share police locations.

Last week, Pelican Narrows issued a notice saying a security checkpoint had been reestablished at the community’s entrance due to concerns of trespassing, trafficking, and related violence.

The notice stated every person entering the community would be asked to show valid identification.

Pelican Narrows is located 370 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert.
