A dog named Daisy who went missing after a car crash in B.C.’s Okanagan has been reunited with her family after a local search and rescue volunteer took it upon himself to lend a hand.
Central Okanagan Search and Rescue shared the story and its happy ending on social media Wednesday.
Volunteer Forrest Kellerman learned about the missing dog when he was called out to a medical rescue on Saturday. While responding, a police officer told Kellerman there had been a rollover crash on the highway nearby.
“Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but the family’s three-year-old Australian shepherd, Daisy, had fled the scene and was missing,” the post from COSAR said.
News of the family’s lost pup struck a chord with Kellerman, who has two Australian shepherds of his own, according to the rescue organization.
Searching for lost pets is outside of COSAR’s mandate, but Kellerman enlisted the help of his wife and used his expertise and his free time to scour the area.
The first two days of “methodically search logging roads and forested areas around the crash site” failed to locate Daisy.
But on Tuesday evening, Kellerman’s wife spotted “something unexpected,” according to COSAR.
“Sitting patiently in the passenger seat of one of the vehicles from Saturday’s accident was Daisy,” the social media post said. “After three nights alone in the woods, she was safe.”
Kellerman immediately alerted Daisy’s people, who rushed to the scene for a reunion.
“The skills members learn can be used however they see fit,” COSAR said. “In this case it was used to bring a family back together.”
