Health Canada is warning parents and caregivers to stop using a wooden pacifier clip sold online after determining it may pose a choking hazard for infants.
The federal agency issued a consumer product safety alert for the COHEALI Wooden Pacifier Clip for baby, which was previously available for purchase on Amazon.ca.
“Health Canada has contacted the foreign selling company who has been unresponsive to requests to voluntary recall,” the agency wrote.
According to Health Canada, the product contains small parts that can detach, creating a potential choking risk for babies and young children.
“The screw linking the wooden piece to the metal clip can become loose,” the notice said.
The advisory said Amazon.ca reported that 762 units of wooden pacifier clips were sold in Canada. One incident related to the product has been reported to Health Canada.
Pacifier clips are designed to keep pacifiers attached to a child’s clothing, preventing them from falling to the ground. However, products that contain detachable components can pose serious risks if infants place loose pieces in their mouths.
“Consumers who have this affected product should immediately stop using it and safely dispose of the item in such a way that it cannot be used again,” Health Canada advised.
The warning highlights a broader concern around baby products sold online. Earlier this year, Health Canada published an updated list of children’s products that consumers should avoid purchasing or using, noting that some unsafe items may continue to be available though online retailers, resale platforms, garage sales and second-hand marketplaces.
The agency recommends checking Canada’s recall database before purchasing products intended for children.
