London, Ont., retirement home goes viral on social media

CTV’s Lauren Stallone catches up with an employee and residents of a local retirement community who’ve recently gone viral.

Employees and residents at Oakcrossing Retirement Living in London, Ont., are using social media to teach users an important lesson.

“People think retirement is boring,” said Ishika Singh, the social media coordinator at Oakcrossing. “We just wanted to show people that your life doesn’t end after retirement and there’s a lot more to do.”

Over the past few weeks, videos posted on the residence’s TikTok and Instagram pages have gained traction online.

“It’s just something different and something you see all the time,” said Ruth Curran, a 103-year-old resident at Oakcrossing. “Now we’re a part of it.”

From ‘Fit Checks’ to the ‘Wow, ok’ trend, Singh said she spends lots of time-consuming social media to ensure her content is up to date.

“I try to link together those trends and sounds with what reflects with residents and their personalities,” said Singh. “You see trends from one aspect but you don’t get to see seniors can also have fun in their life.”
