A driver from Alberta faces multiple charges after Ontario Provincial Police say officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 17 and found two children improperly secured — including one seated on the floor.

Police said the officers were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 17 in Algoma Mills within North Shore Township shortly after 8 p.m. on June 10 when the incident occurred.

Speeding stop

“Police observed a westbound vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed between Lauzon Village Road and Highway 538 and conducted a traffic stop,” OPP said in a news release.

Police said that while speaking with the driver, officers observed that two children were not properly secured in the vehicle, including one child who was seated on the floor.

2 adults removed

“To ensure compliance with occupant restraint requirements, two adult passengers were transported to a local motel, allowing the children to be seated lawfully,” OPP said.

Police then escorted the vehicle to Blind River, where proper child restraint systems were obtained before the vehicle was permitted to continue.

Multiple charges laid

As a result, the driver, a 33-year-old from Airdrie, Alta., was charged with speeding, three counts of passengers failing to wear a seatbelt and two counts of driving while a passenger under 16 fails to occupy a position with a seatbelt.

The driver was released but will have to make a traffic court appearance in Ontario.

“Motorists are reminded to ensure every occupant is properly restrained and that children are secured in approved child restraint systems appropriate for their age, weight and height,” OPP said.
