Two children were taken to hospital on Friday after they were seriously injured in a fire at a residential building in Montreal-North.

The fire started at around 4 p.m. in a three-storey building near the corner of Henri-Bourassa Boulevard and Narcisses Street, according to a spokesperson for the Montreal fire department.

One of the victims was a 13-year-old boy who suffered serious burns, but his life is not in danger, authorities say. However, a nine-year-old boy, who was also severely burned in the fire, remains in critical condition.

The fire was later extinguished and residents of neighbouring units have been allowed back inside.

The Montreal police service is taking over the investigation due to the victims’ serious injuries. Police say the fire is believed to have started on a kitchen stove and appears to be accidental in nature.
