Suspect in Calgary police shooting dies of injuries: CPS

Published:

Alberta's police watchdog is investigating the death of a woman who was shot by a Calgary police officer on Deerfoot Trail Sunday.

An investigation has been launched into a fatal officer-involved shooting on Calgary’s busiest highway.

At 4:17 p.m. on Sunday, officers were called to Deerfoot Trail, just north of Memorial Drive, for reports of an erratic driver.

Police soon determined that the driver was the same suspect who had been evading them for the past 24 hours.

The vehicle was located and stopped by police on Deerfoot Trail between 16 Avenue and Memorial Drive S.E.

“As police worked to bring the driver into custody, a confrontation occurred, resulting in multiple officers using a variety of use-of-force tools, including one officer discharging their service firearm,” the Calgary Police Service (CPS) said in a news release.

The suspect was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, but they later died.

No CPS officers or members of the public were hurt in the incident.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate, as is the standard protocol in any shooting involving police.

All the northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail were shut down for the investigation.

The highway was reopened by about 1:45 a.m.
