A 20-year-old Canadian man has been identified as one of three people who died in a weekend plane crash in the U.S.
Maryland State Police released the identities of the victims on Monday, including Canadian passenger Elad Naidik, 19-year-old passenger David Rabinovich and the plane’s pilot, 26-year-old Yoav Bomrind.
Both Rabinovich and Bomrind are Israeli nationals.
The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, when a single-engine Piper Cherokee plane that was en route from Ocean City, N.J., to Montgomery County Airpark, Md., crashed in Bowie - a city in Maryland’s Prince George’s County, which borders the eastern side of Washington, D.C.
According to a preliminary investigation by Maryland police, a ground and aerial search for the aircraft was conducted on Saturday by multiple first responders, after Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications was tipped off by an iPhone crash alert about the incident 15 minutes after it occurred.
Maryland police say they found the aircraft on Sunday around 3:45 a.m. “in a wooded area in close proximity to a residential area off of Scarlett Oak Court in Bowie.”
All three people onboard were pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
The reason for the crash remains unknown at the time, however investigators believe the aircraft belongs to a local flight school in Montgomery County, Md.
Police say “the aircraft may have been participating in a training flight.”
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is leading the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
