The Ganonoque Police Service has laid charges against a Kingston resident who allegedly stole water from local fire hydrants.

Police say officers received information about a water company stealing water from hydrants around the town on June 4 and 5.

On June 13, public utility employees noticed a pull of water from a hydrant. Police officers on patrol later located the suspect vehicle and driver.

A 44-year-old was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

A water truck was also seized as evidence.

The suspect was held in custody to await a bail hearing. Police did not identify them.

Ganonoque is located on the St. Lawrence River, about 164 kilometres southwest of downtown Ottawa.
