ST. JOHN’S — Officials in Newfoundland and Labrador are asking people to flee a cabin area outside Labrador City as a wildfire burns nearby.
In a post to social media, the province’s Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands says water bombers are dousing the fire, which is burning about eight kilometres west of Labrador City.
The post says people in the cabin area at Walsh River, near Labrador City, have been ordered to evacuate.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says people in the nearby campground and golf course have been asked to prepare for an evacuation.
Labrador City is a mining town near the boundary with Quebec, and it was home to about 7,450 people as of the 2021 census.
The province says the fire by the Walsh River cabins was reported this afternoon.
