Saskatchewan’s police watchdog is investigating after a 58-year-old man died in police custody in southeastern Saskatchewan on Monday.
According to Saskatchewan RCMP, officers received a report of an impaired driver in the ditch of Grid Road 709 near the community of Kipling at 4:20 p.m.
Mounties say they arrested the man for impaired driving when they arrived, but he refused to exit the vehicle and had to be removed by officers who escorted him to their police vehicle.
According to RCMP, the 58-year-old went into medical distress while in the back of the police vehicle.
Officers say they immediately requested EMS assistance and administered CPR until they arrived and took over revival efforts.
However, the man was later declared dead by EMS.
Since the man was in police custody when he died, his death will be investigated by the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT).
SIRT is an independent, civilian-led unit responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police, including in-custody deaths or serious injuries.
This is the third time the organization has been deployed in 2026.
Kipling is located 154 kilometres southeast of Regina.
