Grizzly bear bites hiker in Jasper National Park, prompting trail closure

A sign warns of an area closure due to a bear.

Officials with Jasper National Park say Opal Hills trail has been closed following a bear attack.

Parks Canada says two hikers were involved, but only one was injured.

According to a social media post, the hikers “surprised a grizzly bear at close distance,” prompting the bear to “defend her space and family,”

Parks Canada says the injured hiker suffered two minor bite wounds and was treated and released from the local medical centre the same day.

Officials say the hikers avoided more serious injuries because they had bear spray ready, knew how to use it and had discussed in advance what they’d do if approached by a bear.

The incident happened on July 10.

“This is the first bear-human contact encounter reported in the park since 2014,” officials said.

Visitors to Jasper National Park are reminded to:

  • Follow all closures and warnings;
  • Carry readily-accessible bear spray and know how to use it;
  • Travel in groups whenever possible and
  • Make noise while hiking.

“Here in Jasper, you’re not always in backcountry, but you’re always in bear country,” officials said.
