The Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to open Monday, July 27.
“Unless something crazy happens in Trump land where there’s wildfire smoke and he sees he can leverage us again, who knows,” said Windsor mayor Drew Dilkens.
“I think by all accounts this is going to move forward, there will be a ribbon cutting on Friday, opening on Monday, and folks will be able to cross on bikes and pedestrian-wise on Aug. 5.”
Pete Hoekstra, U.S. Ambassador to Canada, also confirmed the news.
“On Friday, I will be with Dominic and with Mark Wiseman, we’re opening a bridge,” he said.
He added that it shows the collaboration between the two countries.
The bridge opening has been delayed multiple times, with the latest because of concessions from Donald Trump, U.S. President.
The terms of the deal made between Canada and the U.S. haven’t been fully revealed. The Conservatives are now pushing for the federal government to release the details.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said any revenue sharing from bridge tolls will only happen after the construction debt is repaid, then they will be split with the U.S. for the first 15 years.
