The search is on near Kawartha Lakes for a missing 73-year-old pilot after his damaged plane was located late last night. John Musselman reports.

The search for a missing plane has come to an end after crews discovered plane debris near Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park in Ontario.

While parts of the aircraft have been found, the whereabouts of the missing 73-year-old pilot, identified by his family as David Douglas, remain unknown.

Durham Regional police say he took off from Oshawa Airport around 8:30 a.m. Friday and was believed to be heading north toward Kawartha Lakes.

Douglas was flying a small blue and yellow, single-seat, home-built plane with “FOFZ” on its tail.

He was supposed to fly back at 9:30 a.m. that same day, said police, but he never returned. Investigators said he was last reported near Balsam Lake.

A co-ordinated search got underway for Douglas over the weekend.

On Monday, Durham Regional police confirmed plane debris was discovered in the Kawartha Lakes area. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Trenton said the wreckage was observed in Wolf Lake.

Authorities confirmed to CTV News that Douglas has not been found, but said the investigation now falls under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Provincial Police.

Kawartha Lakes OPP will be assisting JRCC in the search, which includes dive techs in the lake areas.

“We hope that Search and Rescue efforts will contribute to continuing the search,” said Trenton JRCC in its latest update.
