A 57-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle firearms and magazines into Canada.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says Gaylon Smith was referred for a secondary examination at the River de Chute port of entry in New Brunswick while returning to Canada from the United States on Monday.

According to a news release Wednesday, border services officers searched the vehicle alongside a CBSA detector dog team where they detected and seized:

  • four firearms
  • twelve over-capacity magazines
  • two magazines

Smith was charged with:

  • smuggling (five counts)
  • making a false statement

Smith appeared in court on Tuesday and is set to appear again in court on Sept. 14.

CBSA says an investigation related to offences under the Customs Act is ongoing.
