Human remains discovered in a Regina backyard earlier this year have been identified, according to police.
In an update issued Thursday morning, the Regina Police Service (RPS) announced that human remains discovered outside a home on the 1300 block of Retallack Street in June have been identified as Wayne Joseph Breed.
Breed was not listed on any missing persons databases, and a match was only found by searching the national RCMP DNA database, according to RPS.
An investigation into the circumstances of the suspicious death is ongoing. Breed’s family has been notified of the development.
As of today’s date, Breed would have been 34-years-old.
RPS noted that information from the public was crucial to identifying Breed, and thanked those who reached out with tips.
The discovery of human remains was reported to Regina police on June 9. Police determined the remains were buried at the property for a minimum of five years.
The current landlord of the property told CTV News he has owned the home since 2009 and said around seven to eight tenants have come through the property since then.
The news of the discovery shook those living nearby in Regina’s North Central neighbourhood.
Amber Button told CTV News on June 19 that while she was saddened by the news, she was not surprised given the location - adding the discovery raises questions for other properties in the area.
“That makes me question how many other houses around the city or this area in particular, could there be remains sitting there? Right?” she said.
“Which is crazy, but yeah, and then to find out it’s been there for about five years.”
