“He’s recovering physically,” Chief Katie McLellan said.

“But as you can imagine, there are lots of things to process as a result of that incident.”

It happened Aug. 10.

Officers were conducting a traffic stop in the community of Spruce Cliff around 11:45 a.m.

Police said “an occupant of the vehicle fired shots,” striking one officer.

They say the suspect — a male — then fled into Edworthy Park.

Officers followed on foot as well as by air with a HAWCS helicopter.

On Thursday, McLellan said “more than a hundred officers” attended that day’s scene.

She called it a “frightening” incident.

“A known criminal went and shot at our officers, shot at other individuals, shot at our HAWCS helicopter,” she said.

Police said they found the suspect dead in the river, “subject to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, or ASIRT, is investigating the circumstances of the man’s death.
