A fourth officer has been suspended over allegations of racism at Station 39 in the Montreal North borough, according to the Montreal Police.
Police said the alleged incidents reportedly took place while the officer was working in the unit, which was dissolved in June over allegations of misconduct and racism.
“The SPVM reiterates that discriminatory or racist behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated, whether among its staff or toward citizens,” Montreal police wrote in a news release.
This suspension took effect on Aug. 19, the release added.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher announced at a late-night news conference on June 12 that 16 police officers from Station 39 in Montreal North were under investigation. Two had been suspended for allegations of racial misconduct toward people they stopped while on duty.
A third officer was suspended nearly two months later. Dadgher announced the suspension in a public meeting on Aug. 11 that addressed allegations of racism within the police unit.
The investigation, overseen by the SPVM’s Professional Standards Division, remains ongoing.
