Manitoba RCMP say historic human remains were recently discovered by a road maintenance crew near a highway last week.
According to RCMP, officers from Virden were called on Aug. 26 at 2:15 p.m. for a report of human remains found in a ditch on Road 57 North, just east of Road 148 West, in the RM of Wallace-Woodworth.
Mounties say the remains were found while the crew were cleaning ditches following recent flooding.
Two pieces of a human skull and a bone were found. A perimeter around the area was established and a forensic anthropologist was called to the scene, along with the Manitoba Historic Resources Branch.
A partial skull, a right shin bone and a lower left femur were identified. RCMP said in a news release the remains “are consistent with those of a historical or archaeological nature.”
Carbon dating and testing are being arranged.
