U.S. President Donald Trump took another jab at Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday, sharing a cartoon image on Truth Social of the two world leaders playing hockey.
In the photo, Trump is donning a USA Hockey jersey and standing over Carney, sprawled on the ice while wearing a Hockey Canada sweater, with Trump telling Carney: “Get up, governor.”
It’s the latest example of Trump calling a prime minister “governor,” as the president has repeatedly suggested Canada become the 51st U.S. state. Trump also referred to Carney’s predecessor, former prime minister Justin Trudeau, as “Governor Trudeau” after taking office in January 2025.
Earlier in the day, Trump said Canada’s exchange rate with the U.S. is “unacceptable” and that it’s “been that way for years.”
“Canada’s (currency) Dollar imbalance with the U.S. is unacceptable,” the post read. “It has been that way for years - but no longer!”
Trump did not elaborate on what he meant by the post. As of Sunday night, Carney has not responded to the president’s comments.
The social media posts come just days before Canada’s tariffs on U.S products go into effect on Tuesday, which will target nearly $28 billion worth of more than 700 American goods.
The levies are in response to 50 per cent tariffs the Trump administration placed on Canada in late August after trade talks between the two countries broke down.
