A club in Regina is giving people the chance to build and fly their own model rocket, by offering a series of workshops in September.
Regina Rockets was formed by rocket enthusiast Noel McAvena, who recently set an altitude record with the Canadian Association of Rocketry.
To celebrate the achievement, he is giving away hundreds of model rocket kits. In addition, 12 workshops will be held throughout September to show people how to build them.
McAvena said model rocketry is a great way to explore applied engineering and physics while having fun.
His daughters Nadia and Nakita, along with several experienced model rocket enthusiasts, were on hand to help out at Wednesday evening’s workshop at the Regina Public Library’s Sunrise Branch.
“In each of the workshops, you’re going to get hands on experience building a model rocket kit,” McAvena said. “You’ll be able to take your model rocket kit at the end of the month out to our launch event at King’s Park Speedway and actually see what you built fly.”
Those who would like to sign up for one of the free-of-charge model rocket kit building workshops can check out the club’s website for a full list of workshop dates and locations.
Those participating in the ‘Reach for the Stars’ Launch Day on Sept. 26 at King’s Park Speedway are asked to register here. Participants can sign up for different time slots.
Those participating in launch day are asked to be on time so they don’t miss their launch window. Any model rockets other than the build kits provided at one of the workshops must have previous approval to fly, must use low power A-D class motors and respect the 1,000 foot altitude limit.
Participants must also agree to comply with the terms of the Canadian Association of Rocketry safety regulations. Seating will be available for spectators in the grandstands,
