Two people were rescued from the waters near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal on Sunday afternoon after their vessel sank, officials say.
In an email to CTV News, a spokesperson for B.C. Ferries said people were seen in the water near the terminal around 3:20 p.m., and both the Spirit of British Columbia and the Coastal Renaissance deployed rescue boats to assist.
“Two people who were aboard a fishing vessel that sank were safely recovered from the water and transported to Tsawwassen terminal,” reads the statement from B.C. Ferries.
“We are grateful for the swift actions of all involved and appreciate our customers’ understanding for any resulting delays.”
B.C. Ferries issued a service notice shortly after, detailing delays for multiple sailings between Tsawwassen and Duke Point.
The 3:15 p.m. sailing bound for Duke Point left 73 minutes behind schedule, and the ferry service’s website said it would arrive at approximately 6:28 p.m.
“We expect the 5:45 p.m. departing Duke Point, the 8:15 p.m. departing Tsawwassen, and the 10:45 p.m. departing Duke Point sailings to also be delayed,” the service notice reads.
Anyone looking for up-to-date information regarding the delays has been asked to check the B.C. Ferries website’s current conditions section.
The ferry service said both B.C. Emergency Health Services and local police were called to attend.
Paramedics treated both rescuees at the terminal before transporting them to hospital, BCEHS said, noting both were in stable condition.
