Small plane makes emergency landing on highway east of Edmonton

A Cessna 172 pilot made an emergency landing on Highway 21 east of Edmonton around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

EDMONTON — A plane made an emergency landing east of Edmonton early Wednesday morning.

Const. Sandra Geiger said officers were dispatched to the Cessna 172 plane shortly before 1:30 a.m. There was a pilot and a passenger involved.

No injuries were reported.

RCMP were told there were no vehicles on the road at the time. Regardless, a traffic advisory was issued.

“This being a significantly unusual circumstance, it’s important that we are ready as drivers on the road to be able to respond accordingly,” Geiger told CTV News Edmonton.

As of 7:30 a.m., the plane had been moved and the road was made accessible to drivers.

A Cessna 172 is a common single-engine, four-seater plane that is used for flight training, aerial patrols and personal use.

RCMP did not know if the plane was being used for training at the time of the emergency landing.
