14-year-old driver sentenced for Saskatoon crash that severely injured 82-year-old man

A Saskatoon judge has sentenced a teen boy responsible for a fiery crash in the spring that severely injured another driver. Laura Woodward reports.

A teen who caused a major Saskatoon crash that severely injured an 82-year-old man has been sentenced to secure custody.

The 14-year-old cannot be named under a youth publication ban.

On May 5, the teen was driving a stolen black SUV on Idylwyld Drive when he crossed the median and crashed into a white van driven by Doug Bremner.

Bremner suffered third-degree burns and multiple broken bones. He was airlifted to Edmonton for treatment.

The teen pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and failing to stop while being pursued by a police officer.

The defence sought a sentence that would allow the teen to remain in the community, but Judge Lisa Watson imposed a custodial sentence.

The teen was sentenced to 300 days — 200 days in secure custody, followed by 100 days of community supervision.

Victim impact statements detailed how the crash affected Bremner and his family.

Before the crash, court heard Bremner was the primary caregiver for his wife, who is battling cancer.
