The Montreal transit authority (STM) confirmed on Sunday that the man who fell onto the tracks at a metro station has died after being struck by an oncoming train.
The STM said that medical services responded to Lionel-Groulx on Saturday at around 10 a.m. after a man in his 40s fell onto the tracks.
The train was unable to come to a stop before the person made it back to the platform," STM spokesperson Renaud Martel-Théorêt.
Urgences-Santé advanced care paramedics and operations chiefs went to the scene, in addition to Montreal fire department (SIM), Montreal police (SPVM) and STM crews.
“At arrival he was in critical condition,” said Urgences-Santé spokesperson Julie Gaulin. “We didn’t transport to the hospital.”
Montreal police confirmed the age of the man and the fact that the death appeared accidental.
A police spokesperson says a surveillance camera video showed the man wasn’t pushed and there was no criminal element.
The STM offered condolences to the victim’s family.
“Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” said Martel-Théorêt. “We will continue our investigation to understand the circumstances of the accident.”
The STM is reminding passengers not to stand too close to the edge of platforms and to stay behind the yellow lines painted on the floor.
